Prophet Ibrahim alayhis-salam worshipped Allah alone. He did not worship idols like his people did. He made du'a to Allah. He asked Allah for a righteous son. Allah answered his du'a. Allah promised him a son who would be patient and gentle.

The son was named Isma'il alayhis-salam. He grew up. He became old enough to walk and work with his father. Then, Prophet Ibrahim alayhis-salam saw a dream. The dreams of Prophets are true - they are revelation from Allah. This dream was a great test from Allah.

Ibrahim alayhis-salam told his son about the dream. "O my son! I have seen in a dream that I am slaughtering you, so look what you think!" (Quran 37:102) Isma'il alayhis-salam loved Allah. He told his father to do what Allah had commanded. "O my father! Do that which you are commanded, if Allah wills, you shall find me of the patient ones."

Both father and son submitted to Allah completely. Ibrahim alayhis-salam laid his son down on his forehead to sacrifice him. Then Allah, the Most Merciful, called out to him: "O Ibrahim! You have fulfilled the dream! Verily, thus do We reward the good-doers."

The test was over. Allah did not let Isma'il alayhis-salam be hurt. He sent a great ram to be sacrificed instead, something they didn’t expect.. Allah, the Most High, says: "And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice."

And Allah praised Ibrahim alayhis-salam for his true faith, and kept his remembrance alive for all of time, just as He mentioned in the Qur’an: "And We left for him (a goodly remembrance) among generations (to come) in later times. Peace be upon Ibrahim! Thus indeed do We reward the good-doers. Verily, he was one of Our believing slaves."

Every year, we remember this true story on Eid ul-Adha - because it teaches us something we must never forget. That Ibrahim alayhis-salam was sacrificing his son for Allah's sake. Something so difficult to do! And Allah protected them and provided a way for them from where they never expected. "And whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine."

So when something feels hard - remember Ibrahim and Isma'il alayhimas-salam. They chose Allah above everything else. Allah was enough for them. And Allah is enough for you too.
